The office of the Director of National Intelligence in the United States of America (USA) has rejected reports that the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) is a manmade or genetically modified virus. A statement was issued to that effect by the Director of National Intelligence (DNI) on Thursday.

In the statement, DNI said, “The entire intelligence community has been consistently providing critical support to US policymakers and those responding to the Covid-19 virus, which originated in China. The Intelligence Community with the wide scientific consensus that the Covid-19 virus was not manmade or genetically modified.”

The office of DNI oversees the US intelligence community and serves as the principal advisor to the President on issues related to national security.

China has been facing global criticism after unconfirmed reports suggested that the Covid-19 was the result of an accident at a lab in Wuhan city in Hubei province. These reports are yet to be verified.

The statement by the office of DIN further reads, “The intelligence community will continue to rigorously examine emerging information and intelligence to determine whether the outbreak began through contact with infected animals or if it was the result of an accident at a laboratory in Wuhan.”

China reported the first case of Covid-19 (Sars-CoV-2) from a wet market in Wuhan on December 31, 2019.

The pandemic has infected over 32 lakh people across the globe, claiming the lives of over 2 lakh patients to date.
The report by the office of DIN comes as a temporary relief for China at a time when the global community has been reluctant in doing any business with it in the wake of the outbreak.
